A brief history of the Bloody Mary cocktail

This traditional cocktail is said to have been invented in Paris in the early 1920s and supposedly rose to fame through stars of the day like Ernest Hemingway and Rita Hayworth.
Its main ingredients are a combination of Russian and American influence; during the Revolution, the Russians imported vodka to Paris and the Americans imported tinned tomato juice, and they were brought together to make a ‘tomato juice cocktail'. From there, the flavour combinations and spices expanded, and the Bloody Mary cocktail was born.

Marvellous Bloody Mary Prawns Recipe
Servings: 6
Time: 45 min
Ingredients
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Black pepper
1 tbsp celery salt (plus extra to serve)
1 tbsp lemon rind, finely grated
850ml Bullshot Chicken Bone Broth
2kg king prawns, peeled and deveined
20g butter
3 garlic cloves, crushed
2 tsp smoked paprika
120ml vodka
180ml passata
240ml tomato juice
tbsp Tabasco (or other hot sauce of your choice)
1 bunch celery sticks
Handful of celery leaves, finely chopped, to serve
1 lemon, cut into wedges, to serve
For the dipping sauce
150ml sour cream
1 tbsp tomato sauce
1 tbsp Tabasco (or other hot sauce of your choice)
1 tbsp lemon juice
Cooking method
-
In a small bowl, combine the Worcestershire sauce, pepper, 2 tsp celery salt, lemon rind, and half the stock. Add the prawns and give them a good mix, making sure they’re evenly coated in the marinade. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge for 1 hour. Remove, drain the prawns, and discard the marinade. Note: Be sure not to reuse your marinade as it may not be safe to eat due to the raw prawns.
-
Next, melt the butter in a deep, large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the garlic and paprika, and cook for 30 seconds to release the fragrance. Add the vodka, passata, tomato juice, Tabasco, remaining celery salt, and remaining stock. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
-
Add the marinated prawns to the sauce and cook for 5 minutes, until the prawns are cooked through.
-
To make your dipping sauce, simply combine all the ingredients in a bowl, and season with salt and pepper.
-
Serve your marvellous prawns with an extra sprinkle of celery salt, dipping sauce on the side, and garnish with celery sticks and lemon wedges. Enjoy!
